How to Fold a Hollow Rose (General)

In the last post, I’ve displayed several pictures of the flower I folded. In this post, I would try to explain some obstacles I encountered while making this specific rose.

Crease Pattern

Crease pattern is the biggest problem.(At least for me…)

This crease pattern is quite difficult to read, since there isn’t any evidence of the proportions. Yet, we can decide the relative length by measurement. Here’s the results.

CP
The final horizontal line takes up 1/10 of the width of the square, while the first slope intersects the bottom edge at its 1/11.It is also easy to observe that the quadrilaterals on the slant lines are symmetrical, in both two directions, which means they are rhombs.

You may see the details in this photo.
Detail

To specify the actual position of rhombs, we have that the green is 1/3 the blue line after rough measurement. And that’s it! The position of A is fixed, then the symmetrical B, and the position of C. Therefore, the location of line AC is determined, which gives us the intersection of the vertical slant and line AC.
Up to now, we have worked out the distribution of all the points.

Folding

Personally speaking, the folding process are diveded in to three: drawing the lines, collapsing the crease pattern, and polish the appearance.
Generally, the folding process for this flower is largely the same as that of another rose designed by Robert J. Lang-“A Miura-ken Beauty Rose“.
So, if you want to try this Hollow Rose, I would strongly recommend you to try this Miura-ken rose first. You can just find any tutoring video on YouTube and follow all the steps to make one before you get back to this project.

Since this is only a general tutoring, I am too lazy to take pictures of each step… Maybe someday, I would try to make a video and upload it to the web.

Polishing

Actually, this step is subjective, or varies from person to person. But there are still some of my recommendations here for you.

If you have collapsed the crease pattern correctly, you would get a paper “bowl” with no bottom, like this:
top
side
you may need some glue to make it like a bowl

After getting this bowl, you need to plug out the innermost layer, making them pointing up, and push them into the centeral hole. And finally, curl the paper edge to make them like flower petals.

.

And that’s all for this post~
Wish all of you can make this rose successfully!

Even though I did not add many pictures, I did not add many pictures. [Doge]
